Recipes for Blood Oranges
Blood oranges have been popular in Italy and Spain for centuries. They are now cultivated in the US. Look for blood oranges at your grocery store from December to May. The Moro variety is available from December to March.
Make a Blood Orange Drink
You can make a delicious drink with vodka and blood-orange juice. You’ll need flaky sea salt, two lime slices, ice, and three tablespoons of fresh blood-orange juice.
Make sure you have one twist from the peel to use as a garnish. You’ll also want two tablespoons of tomato juice and one and a half ounces of tequila.
Run the cut side of one of your lime slices around the rim of your glass. Dip the rim in salt and then fill it with ice.
Add your tequila and juices. Drop a few dashes of hot sauce and stir once. Garnish with your twist, lime slices, and a bit of black pepper. Check out these other tasty citrus cocktails.
Blood Orange Fish
For this dish, you’ll need one chopped blood orange, half a cup of cubed avocado, and a third cup of chopped red onion.
Mince two teaspoons of red jalapeno and squeeze two teaspoons of fresh lime juice. You’ll also need two teaspoons of olive oil and two six ounce mahi-mahi fillets.
Add avocado, onion, jalapeno, lime juice, and oranges to a bowl. Stir to blend and season the salsa with salt. Heat the oil in a medium-sized skillet over medium heat.
Sprinkle your fish with pepper and salt. Add the fish to the skillet. Saute until cooked through and brown, around five minutes for each side. Place your fillets on two plates. Spoon your salsa over the fish and serve.
Blood Orange Chicken
For this dish, you’ll need four boneless skinless chicken breasts. Halve all four. Juice two blood oranges and mince half an onion. Chop three cloves of garlic and juice three more blood oranges.
Set aside three tablespoons of olive oil and one tablespoon of butter. You'll also need three-quarter cups of chicken stock. Chop one teaspoon of fresh parsley and set aside three tablespoons of dry white wine.
In a baking dish, sprinkle the juice of two blood oranges over chicken. Marinate for 24 hours. Drain and discard the unused marinade. Pour the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Season the chicken breasts with pepper and salt.
Brown chicken on both sides. It will take around four minutes per side. Transfer to a plate and cover with foil.
Melt butter in a cleaned skillet over medium heat and add your onion and garlic. This will take around five minutes. Stir in juice of three blood oranges, white wine, parsley, and chicken stock. Bring this mixture to a boil.
Return chicken breasts to the skillet and lower the heat. Simmer until it’s no longer pink inside. This could take up to seven minutes. Plate your chicken and drizzle the pan juice over the meat.
