DIY Skincare Using Kaffir Lime
While it might sound strange at first, you'll want to focus on the kaffir lime leaves, not fruit, for skincare.
And, if you're new to DIY treatments, remember that you should patch test all homemade products before using them. Choose a sensitive but hidden area like the inside of your wrist or behind an ear for starters.
Exfoliation
This soak and scrub works best on hands and feet, but can also be used on elbows and knees, or any rough patch of skin.
First, fill a bowl large enough to fit both of your feet with freshly crushed kaffir lime leaves. You can smash your leaves using a simple mortar and pestle, or roughly chop them and massage them with your hands after.
Then, add a tablespoon or two of natural, coarse sea salt or Himalayan salt and enough warm water to cover. Soak the affected area of your body in this mixture for ten minutes, or until it begins to cool. This will loosen dead skin and moisturize.
Lastly, use the salt and lime mixture from the bottom of your bowl to scrub away rough spots. As you exfoliate, your skin will start to feel shiny and smooth.
Rinse away any remaining lime leaves or salt, and let your skin air dry.
Facial Treatment
If you're tackling oily or acne-prone skin, the kaffir lime's antibacterial properties can help reduce redness and irritation, shrink pores, and improve your skin's overall appearance.
Start by crushing and boiling fresh kaffir lime leaves. You'll want to cook your leaves for long enough that they release their essential oils. It's easy to tell when this happens because your whole kitchen will smell like fresh limes.
Once you have created your lime leaf extract, continue cooking it until the liquid has reduced and darkened. You'll want to finish up with around one cup of liquid.
Then, combine your lime concentrate with 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar or witch hazel. Store this mixture in the refrigerator and use it like a toner or astringent as needed.
