A kaffir lime mojito is the perfect way to stay refreshed, and it's an ultimate must-try for those who haven't yet. Learn the recipe below!
Who says delicious cuisine has to be complicated?
The mojito is the most popular drink in the world. But it is also one of the simplest citrus cocktails to create.
Mojitos have been around for years and were commonly enjoyed by Ernest Hemingway. When Hemingway moved from Key West to Havana in 1939, he brought his love of mojitos with him.
Fast-forward to today, and there are many variations of the lime-based cocktail. Our favorite is the kaffir lime mojito, which combines fresh fruits and spices to create a drink bursting with flavor.

Gather Your Mojito Ingredients
To create this kaffir lime mojito, you need:
- 4 kaffir lime leaves (chopped into pieces)
- 6 mint leaves (plus extra for garnish)
- 12 Thai basil leaves (with stems)
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 lime (cut into wedges)
- 6 ounces white rum
- 1 can chilled club soda
- Ice
Note: these ingredients are for two servings. Feel free to adjust as necessary based on how many mojitos you are concocting.
If you want to make a virgin kaffir lime mojito, omit the rum and double the club soda.
What Is Thai Basil?
Thai basil has purple stems and a spicy, licorice-like flavor.
Creating the perfect kaffir lime mojito is all about balancing different flavors. Kaffir limes have strong, citrusy aromas and tastes. But the warm, peppery flavors from the Thai basil balances the citrus to create a zesty cocktail.
Muddle, Muddle, Muddle
Once the ingredients are ready, prepare two glasses with ice. Let the glasses sit so they can chill while you mix the other ingredients.
Get out your shaker. Combine the mint leaves, kaffir lime leaves, Thai basil, sugar, and two lime wedges.
Muddle the ingredients at the base of the glass. Continue until the limes have released their juices and all of the brown sugar dissolves.
How to Muddle a Cocktail
Muddling is the act of pummeling fruits, herbs, and spices. As you crush the leaves and fruits, their juices are extracted for a more flavorful cocktail.
When muddling, push firmly down while slightly twisting your wrist. Start by pressing down lightly on the leaves, then gradually push harder to extract all of the flavors.
If your kitchen does not have a muddler, you can use a wooden spoon, mortar and pestle, or French rolling pin.
Add Rum & Shake
The next step in how to make a mojito is to combine the alcohol. If you are making a mocktail, use club soda instead.
Add a scoop of ice and the white rum to your concoction. Seal and shake. We recommend counting to eleven and using your entire upper body to shake the mixture.
Strain & Garnish
Strain the mixture into your prepared glasses. Top the drinks with club soda. Add a few mint leaves and a lime wedge for garnish.
Voilà! You have just created the best kind of mojito. How refreshing does it taste?
